And in the past week, we’ve also had several great events, including Hacks/Hackers Vancouver powering through their meetup by only candlelight: The week ahead: Hacks/Hackers Halifax launches. As part of the WordCamp US Community Summit, Hacks/Hackers Philly is co-hosting a meetup about the intersections of WordPress and media. In Montreal, tonight’s event is all about maps: how to use map templates, satellite imagery, gather and distribute geographic data, and more.

Hacks/Hackers Connect, the launchpad event series for news-media entrepreneurs developed in partnership with Google News Labs, is on the road again. Mark your calendars now for the next three events: San Francisco: Jan. 22-23, London: Feb. 5-7, New York City: Feb. 26-27 Until then… The week ahead: Hacks/Hackers Vancouver holds its inaugural media startup showcase. The São Paulo group discusses infographics with Beatriz Blanco at its next gathering.

Announcing new Connect events in SF, London & NYC

After a few months spent toiling in the Hacks/Hackers laboratory, we’re back and happy to announce the details for Connect events in San Francisco, London, and NYC. Hold the date The San Francisco event will take place on the weekend of January 22 at the startup co-working space Runway, followed by events in London on the weekend of February 5 at Rainmaking Loft, and New York City on the weekend of February 26 at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism.

Happy Wednesday! Watch for news soon from Hacks/Hackers about the next Connect events in New York, San Francisco and London. The week ahead: Hacks/Hackers IRE in Columbia, Mo., will hear about research into the page load times of news websites. In Los Angeles, the group will hear about three projects during a Show and Tell with the L,A, Times Data Desk. In Lima, Hacks/Hackers chats with the Electronic Frontier Foundation about defending digital privacy.

The week ahead for Hacks/Hackers: In Montréal tonight, they’ll be learning about Crypto 101 – Secure communication for journalists – including understanding encryption and tools to use for protection from government surveillance. In Zürich, the group will hear how Neue Zürcher Zeitung built this beautiful 3-D interactive about the first ascent of the Matterhorn.

Happy Wednesday. Hacks/Hackers Austin celebrated its 5th birthday last night with cake, tacos and an event on media innovation. Cheers to another 5 years! The week ahead for Hacks/Hackers: The Miami Hacks/Hackers group holds a Q&A with the founders of the media startup The New Tropic. In Vancouver, the local group is meeting up for a social event, to commiserate about the seasons changing (and relax now that the national election is complete).
