Conferences in Europe and Asia this weekend
Happy Sunday, hacks and hackers! If you're in Europe, you may have heard that the European investigative journalism symposium, also known as #Dataharvest, is taking place this weekend in Mechelen, Belgium.
Meanwhile, the Asian-American Journalists Association is holding their N3 Conference over in Hong Kong, also called New. Now. Next. If you can't be in either place, you can follow them on Twitter at #Dataharvest and #N3con.
The week ahead:
- Brisbane is making podcasts
- Lagos and Abuja are holding data journalism workshops
- Miami and IRE are holding their regular open labs
- Arequipa is discussing informed elections
Worth a read:
- If you surf European websites, you've almost certainly had to click a popup warning about cookies. A study by the Reuters Institute found that European news sites actually load more third-party cookies than other sites (NiemanLab)
- So far this year, Facebook has disabled more than a billion (yes, a billion with a "b") fake accounts. The platform plans to share more data on their prevention efforts (Recode)
- Al Jazeera experimented with Google's Vision API to run an analysis on the photos on their website, and their context. Trump's face showed "20 percent joy, 0.6 percent anger, 3 percent sorrow, and 2 percent surprise" (GIJN)
