Early bird deadline + new sessions & workshops: Hacks/Hackers AI x Journalism Summit (May 7–8)
AI x Journalism Summit sessions, HH @ SXSW 2025, updates from our University of Minnesota journalism hackathon, journalism jobs and more...

February 15th is the early bird ticket deadline for the first-ever Hacks/Hackers AI x Journalism Summit, May 7–8. At the summit, reporters, editors, product managers and technologists will spend two days gaining practical skills and insights to fundamentally rethink what a news product can be in the AI era and thrive in the new media landscape.
We are continually updating the summit program (so be sure to check back!) with a wide variety of practical hands-on workshops, real-world case studies and collaborative talks, including:
- Designing AI for Journalism: Understanding the Tech, Applying the Thinking
- AI for Local Impact: Lessons from The Texas Tribune
- How to Become a Better Manager with AI (Presented by Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY)
- Digital Democracy at CalMatters: Covering State Legislatures With the Help of AI
Summit sessions are all aimed at demonstrating how participants can use AI to strengthen reporting, streamline workflows, create more impactful stories and build innovative news products.
A quick update, with more to come: AI + Local News Hackathon at the University of Minnesota
In collaboration with the Minnesota Journalism Center, we just finished a hackathon that assembled journalists, technologists and community members from across Minnesota to spend a day and a half developing, designing and prototyping tools to build better local news coverage. We're putting together a wrap-up article about the hackathon, but, in the meantime, read some takeaways and updates from hackathon participants Nick Capaldini and Fabian Andrade, Alex Mahadevan, a judge at the hackathon, and Benjamin Toff, a professor at University of Minnesota and director of the Minnesota Journalism Center, which helped organize the event.
Join us at SXSW 2025: AI x Journalism House (March 10–11)
Hacks/Hackers returns to SXSW! In partnership with Online News Association, and venue hosts the Texas Tribune, Hacks/Hackers is once again convening AI x Journalism House at SXSW.

More details to come, but be sure to join us for two days of workshops, speakers and networking alongside the SXSW conference to dive deeper into how artificial intelligence is changing how we create and distribute news and information.
