Knight invests in technology and democracy

Hi, hacks and hackers! The Knight Foundation just announced an enormous $50 million investment in the study of technology and democracy. This support helped establish a new Center for Information, Technology and Public Life at the University of North Carolina.

  • Polis is collaborating with the Google News Initiative to reach out to newsrooms around the world to see how they’re incorporating AI and wrote about what they’ve learned so far (Polis)
  • Earlier this month, the Investigative Reporting Workshop launched The Accountability Project, a tool that aggregates public datasets in an easy to use, searchable database (Investigative Reporting Workshop)
  • The Washington Post is establishing a computational political journalism lab ahead of the 2020 U.S. election  to develop tools that help journalists everywhere cover elections (Nieman Lab)
